A Generous Promise: Matching Donations to Save West Klosterman Preserve

A former car dealer from New Port Richey has pledged to match donations to help save the West Klosterman Preserve.

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - The effort to protect an essential part of Pinellas County's natural legacy is intensifying, thanks to the ongoing support from John "Mr. Friendly" Gilliss. The former Pasco County automobile dealer, renowned for his successful Friendly Kia dealership in New Port Richey, has launched a new $50,000 matching donation initiative this summer to safeguard the West Klosterman Preserve from potential development.

Mr. Friendly's initial matching campaign in July achieved a successful fundraising result of $100,000 for the cause. The objective of this latest campaign is to replicate that achievement and close the remaining funding deficit before the September 15th fundraising cut-off. With the county's pledge of $1.5 million, WK Preservation Group is required to gather around $500,000 to finalize the acquisition of the 14-acre preserve.

The West Klosterman Preserve is more than an empty space. Situated north of W. Klosterman Road in Tarpon Springs, this unspoiled upland scrub habitat serves as a sanctuary for endangered species such as the gopher tortoise and rare flora like the giant air plant and Florida rosemary. Despite facing a threat to its future when the Pinellas County School Board listed the land for sale in January 2020.

In response, local residents mobilized by establishing the WK Preservation Group, a non-profit committed to safeguarding this "paradise" and similar areas throughout Tampa Bay. Through the collective efforts of board members, volunteers, and donors from Florida and beyond, they have obtained funding via direct contributions and initiatives like Mr. Friendly's matching campaigns.

Despite encountering obstacles in securing legislative funding for the year 2022, the group's unwavering determination shines through. Their resilience was particularly evident when they successfully negotiated a groundbreaking agreement with Pinellas County on April 2nd to secure shared funding, representing a significant milestone in their efforts. This collaboration not only signifies progress but also underscores the importance of the cause they are championing.

The renewed commitment shown by Mr. Friendly, a key figure in the community, injects a fresh wave of enthusiasm and hope into the group's mission. With his steadfast dedication and leadership, the community is now presented with a crucial opportunity to protect and preserve this vital habitat for future generations. The synergy between the group, the county, and dedicated individuals like Mr. Friendly exemplifies the power of collective action in achieving common goals and making a positive impact on the environment.

As they navigate the challenges and uncertainties that lie ahead, the group's unity and perseverance will be essential in overcoming obstacles and realizing their vision of safeguarding the habitat. The support and collaboration they have garnered thus far serve as a testament to the belief that when communities come together with a shared purpose, they can overcome adversity and create lasting change. The journey towards conservation and environmental protection is a continuous one, but with their determination and collaborative spirit, the group is well-positioned to make a meaningful difference in the preservation of this essential habitat.
